Directions to John's Carpet House
For the summer of 2007, the schedule will be every Sunday from 4pm til dark until the end of September. Here is a link to Google Maps and the address: 2133 Frederick St Detroit, MI 48211 The festival actually occurs in a field across the street from where John used to live, so this is actually the address of a field. If you can get to the Detroit Institute of Arts, then you will find it pretty easy to follow Warren to St Aubin to Frederick and the Carpet House.  If you have any questions, call Pete Barrow at (313) 948-5911

I know Stix from his muscular drumming at the Carpet House, and for his singing while drumming.  He has been pounding the skins since he was 14:  drums, bongos, congas.   His father played percussion, bongos and congas.  Stix was playing in churches when he was 19.

In the gospel bands, Stix has played in Alabama, Indiana, Columbus Ohio, many churches in Chicago and Detroit.  In 1982 he played in the Echos of Zion.  In 1985 he played with the Sensational Thunderbirds, and later in Divine Perception.  He started singing in the background for the Sensational Thunderbirds.

He started playing R&B in 1990 in Totally Unique.  They record in the studio on Wade off Chalmers a blend of rap and R&B.  He played in Blues Plus for 5 years.  Blues Plus was well known for playing at the Al's Olympia  Bar and Attic Bar, and a Comcast Blues special.  The band dissolved when the bass player passed away.

In the last few years Stix has played with the JB's with Yancy at Al's Olympia Bar, and with Emmanel in the Midwest Blues Band.

If Stix hands you a business card, it says "Blues Plus".  It's great seeing such young, muscular guys choosing to play the blues as their first choice.   Blues can't ever really go away because all of American popular music flows from it.  One of these days Stix is going to drum his way into a hit.
