Directions to John's Carpet House
For the summer of 2007, the schedule will be every Sunday from 4pm til dark until the end of September. Here is a link to Google Maps and the address: 2133 Frederick St Detroit, MI 48211 The festival actually occurs in a field across the street from where John used to live, so this is actually the address of a field. If you can get to the Detroit Institute of Arts, then you will find it pretty easy to follow Warren to St Aubin to Frederick and the Carpet House.  If you have any questions, call Pete Barrow at (313) 948-5911

Kenny Miller was raised in Pontotoc, Mississippi.  He first picked up the harmonica at age 8.  His mother was a harmonica and guitar player who played around Pontotoc for picnics and other events.  She played blues and there were several cousins who also played instruments who often joined her.  Kenny would play his harp.  He moved to Mt Clemons Michigan in 1952 at age 14.

By the time he moved to Mt Clemons he had started getting away from harmonica and was playing guitar. His first professional gig was in 1958 at  Brown’s Show Bar on Quinne Road.  By age 21 he was playing professionally.  He has played with Albert Collins, and has sat in with B.B. king’s group.  He formed his own band around 1991.  He has just re-released two CDs.  “Midnight Groove” which was a live set recorded  at Chrises Lounge in Mt Clemens in 1993 .  The album  “Kenny Blues” was first released by the Famous Coachman’s label  in 1996.  Both have been re-released by No-Cover Productions and are available at CDBaby.com

The current line up of Kenny’s band is  himself on vocals, guitar, harmonica, Hank Cleaton on keyboards, Rick Gould on drums, and Richard Adams on saxophone.

Many of  the songs on both albums are Kenny originals.  He spent about a year writing the songs on “Kenny Blues”.  For the song   “What Is It?”,  they were practicing in a club and just rehearsing  --not really playing anything-- and a lady came up and asked “What Is It?”  She really liked the tune.  They didn’t really know what it was, so they kept her question as the title.  On another tune, Kenny overheard a woman bragging “My leg is bigger than hers”, so  he wrote a song about that.  The originals on “Kenny Blues” are “Kenny Blues”, “Whip It on Me”,  “What Is It?”, “Kenny Blues Reprise”, and “Big Legg Woman”.

Kenny came to John’s Carpet house just about every Sunday.  John held him in very high esteem.  Kenny said he and John went “way back”.

You can hear his band at the upcoming ...  heck why don't you book'em?
