Directions to John's Carpet House
For the summer of 2007, the schedule will be every Sunday from 4pm til dark until the end of September.  Here is the address:  2133  Frederick St Detroit, MI 48211  The festival actually occurs in a field across the street from where John used to live, so this is actually the address of a field.   If you can get to the Detroit Institute of Arts, then you will find it pretty easy to follow Warren to St Aubin to Frederick and the Carpet House.   If you have any questions, call Pete Barrow at (313) 948-5911

Another great jam!  But will the weather hold for one more?   I don't know.

I was real glad I wore a heavy shirt and a jacket.

Last weekend was cooler and I sat on the grass in front of the stage.  It was funny that people are so well trained that no one sits in front of the stage even where it is overcast and there is no sun.   The cars and vans are ringed around the front of the jamming area leaving this huge open area in front.  Normally no one sits there because they would bake in the sun.  Ha!  But I say there, enjoying a beer.  Occasionally people would be dancing around me.  Party on, party on!

We had some great musicians, some of whom I never saw before, some great soul singers.  Willie Willie played base.  Normally he plays keyboards.  Mitchell played guitar, filling in Hendrix riffs in between songs as he always does.   Guitar Bernie played the whole time.  His bum knee had had some therapy and was a lot better.  And as for the rest, well, I guess I had so much fun talking to people, I don't remember.   I saw Blair.  Blair is the great Urban Folk singer guitarist.  Urban Folk is a genre he invented for himself.  It was his first time there, but he arrived after dark and only saw people picking up their equipment.

Pete officiated as always, and made everyone feel like they were in a barbecue in their own back yard with their closest 400 friends.

The weather cooperated and we had another perfect Carpet House Jam.

It was  perfect weather for a jam in a field under a tree!  I'm guessing there were 500 people, maybe 1,000  it's had to tell.  The cars were ringed two deep around the field and the tree under which the musians play.  There were a few grills with lazy blue smoke drifting from them.  The organiser and master of cerimonies, Pete, as always made everyone feel like they were part of his extended family.  Pete cut the grass, put the gas in the generator, put the roll of toilet paper in the outhouse, and MC'd all afternoon.  Pete also has his small army of folks to help, but Pete is the great organizer.  If you need help with an event, call Pete!

Harmonica Shaw showed up, and he organized the Harmonica Army.  He got everyone playing.  Kenny Miller sang, and a bunch of other people sang as well.  Kenny Mitchell was feeling frisky and  played the guitar while laying flat on his back.

Large crowds of people were dancing.

It's the kind of day were you just stand there, listen to the music, make a few new friends, and just plain feel good.

We were rained out by the remnents of Hurrane Ike!  Yikes!  This definately does not look to be an Indian summer.  But we'll try again next week.

Wow, I can't believe we had another entire summer of music thanks to Big Time Pete Barrow and all the musicians he has recruited from all over during the summer.  Pete has his generator chugging out electricity and the musicians chugging out excitement.  Every jam has more cars, more people, more excitement, more barbecues smoking away, but it never seems more crowded, just more fun!

The jams continue on until Pete says it is too cold.  So come on!  Enjoy these last few which usually last at least through September, sometimes into October.   It ain't over til it's over!
